This Project addresses malnutrition and food insecurity among low-income families in the rural Kamonyi District of Rwanda. By establishing kitchen gardens and providing seeds, seedlings, and chickens, the project empowers families to improve their nutrition, particularly for vulnerable groups such as children under five and pregnant women. These interventions help families transition from critical malnutrition to healthier living while promoting the sustainability of kitchen gardens. To enhance resilience, the project organizes participants into Savings and Internal Lending Groups (SILGs), enabling families to pool resources, share knowledge, and foster financial collaboration.
In addition to improving food security, the project focuses on environmental protection and community capacity-building. It promotes sustainable agricultural practices that conserve soil and preserve the local ecosystem, ensuring long-term benefits for the environment and participants. Families receive training on ecological gardening techniques and sustainable resource management, equipping them with the skills to maintain their gardens and protect natural resources. Through its integrated approach, the project not only improves immediate nutritional outcomes but also empowers communities to sustain these achievements and build a healthier, more resilient future.
